Economic growth for the Napa Valley began to flourish by the turn of the 20th century with banking, commercial and retail activities along with a variety of other light industry evolving within the city and into downtown. During that time wineries and other agricultural pursuits were taking place just north of the city and in the city itself industries such as steel and shipping, leather tannery and prune processing were taking off. Today the city's economy is primarily based on the wine industry, tourism, hospitality and fine dining.
